New Location of the Bronze Soldier
Moved from Tõnismägi to the military cemetery in 2007, the Bronze Soldier still carries disputes over war and occupation.
A new location did not give the memorial a single, agreed meaning. For some it commemorates victory over Nazism and family losses; for others it evokes Soviet occupation and its symbols of state power. The 2007 transfer from Tõnismägi to the cemetery on Filtri tee brought conflicting memories into public debate. At the monument, distinguish historical events, individual mourning and political interpretations made at different times. Remember too that the cemetery is a burial ground, not merely a stage for controversy.
