Stalin Monument at Baltic Station

A statue of Stalin near Tallinn’s railway station made Soviet authority visible to people arriving in the city.

A station square shapes a visitor’s first impression. The Stalin monument placed near Balti jaam used that visibility to glorify the dictator and the Soviet state. After official denunciation of Stalin’s personality cult, such statues were removed from public space. The missing monument invites us to read an apparently ordinary square as a site of political change: power can shape a city by taking a statue down as well as putting one up.
