Lenin Monument
The removal of Lenin’s statue near present-day Iceland Square in 1991 marked a visible change of political power.
The Lenin monument stood before a Soviet centre of authority, joining party ideology to public space. After Estonia restored its independence, the statue was removed in 1991. The change was immediately visible: the bronze figure vanished, but the story of its installation and removal remained part of the square. The site shows that public space is never wholly neutral; a symbol erected by one regime may be rejected by the next.
