Viktor Kingissepp Monument

A monument to Viktor Kingissepp on Harjumägi brought a Soviet-approved revolutionary hero to the edge of the Old Town.

The Kingissepp monument made Harjumägi a place of official political remembrance. Soviet authorities presented the communist revolutionary as an example to be honoured, using sculpture to embed their version of history in the everyday city. After Estonia regained independence, that message lost its former place in public space. The vanished statue still matters on a map: it raises the question of whose memory is given a public platform and when that decision is reversed.
