Kalinin Monument

A Kalinin statue and ideologically named square turned a Tallinn park into a display of Soviet authority.

The monument to Mikhail Kalinin in the Tornide väljak area was more than a tribute to one person. Together with an official place name, it made public space carry a Soviet account of history. People could pass it as part of an ordinary day, yet the statue and name repeated a political message. Its later disappearance and the change in naming show how quickly an apparently permanent landscape of power can be remade.
