War of Independence Victory Column
The War of Independence Victory Column commemorates Estonia’s struggle for independence on a square repeatedly redesigned by history.
The monument beside Freedom Square links remembrance of the War of Independence with the Cross of Liberty motif. The square itself has had different names and monuments under different governments. Visitors therefore see more than one memorial: this is a place where authorities and society repeatedly decided which past to place in view. The column’s present meaning grows from that wider story, not only its height or material.
