Medieval Brewers’ Tallinn
Brewing in medieval Tallinn was an economic activity requiring skill, supplies and rights.
Beer belonged to the town’s food and drink culture, and brewing connected grain, water, fuel and labour. Rights to brew and sell could vary with period, household and city rules. It is too simple to claim that water was always unsafe and beer always safe: quality depended on preparation and circumstances. More revealing is how an everyday drink became a matter of taxes, privilege and competition.
