The Brotherhood of Blackheads united unmarried merchants in business, celebration and civic defence.
The Brotherhood of Blackheads offered young unmarried merchants a network, ceremonies and a way to establish a public standing in Tallinn. Its members did more than feast: the brotherhood also took part in the defence of the city and other shared duties. The facade at Pikk 26 displays the importance of being visibly associated with the group. Access to such opportunities was shaped by status and background.
