St Olaf’s Guild
St Olaf’s Guild recalls differences in wealth and influence even among Tallinn’s craftspeople.
St Olaf’s Guild united tradespeople whose place in the city’s social order differed from that of wealthier associations. A guild offered representation, social ties and support, but it also showed how carefully medieval towns divided their inhabitants. In the world of guilds along Pikk Street, the word craftsperson did not describe one social rank. The value of work and the worker’s say in civic affairs were not necessarily the same.
