Maarjamäe Obelisk
The Maarjamäe Obelisk commemorated the Baltic Fleet’s Ice Cruise and became a highly visible symbol on the coast.
The obelisk’s pointed outline refers to the Ice Cruise of 1918, when ships were moved across the Baltic in difficult ice conditions. The Soviet memorial presented the operation as an official story of heroism. Yet it stands in a real maritime landscape where war, technology and human experience were more varied than ceremonial form suggests. After the change of political order, the monument also asks who chooses to set history in stone and for what purpose.
