Maarjamäe Memorial
The Maarjamäe Memorial occupies a coastal slope where Soviet remembrance and competing histories meet.
The large Maarjamäe complex was designed to shape public memory of war. Open plazas, concrete and a sea view create a deliberately ceremonial experience, yet the wars and regimes connected with this ground cannot be reduced to one heroic account. Weathering has added a layer that the designers did not control. Other memorial sites stand in the wider area, and their particular purposes should be understood separately from this complex.
