Victory Square

The name Victory Square shows how present-day Freedom Square was used to convey a government’s message.

Tallinn’s central square has carried different names and designs over time. The designation Victory Square belonged to a period when public space was expected to reflect the ruling order’s account of war and victory. A change of name affected maps, addresses, ceremonies and an ordinary meeting place. Today’s Freedom Square makes that continuity visible: the open space remains, while its official meaning can be reversed when political power changes.
