Peter the Great Monument

A statue of Peter I near today’s Freedom Square projected Russian imperial power until the Estonian Republic removed it.

The monument to Emperor Peter I gave an important Tallinn square a symbol of Russian state authority. With the formation of independent Estonia, that message no longer suited the new public space, and the statue was taken down. The square later acquired other names and memorials. Today’s Freedom Square is therefore also the site of a vanished figure: political change altered its most prominent visual symbols as well as its government.
