Eternal Flame at Tõnismägi

The eternal flame at Tõnismägi was a ritual element of Soviet war remembrance whose meaning shifted with political change.

The flame near the Bronze Soldier added a daily ritual to the monument: officially, the fire stood for unbroken memory. At ceremonies and on ordinary days it also carried a state-sanctioned account of the war. After Estonia regained independence, the public role and fate of the flame changed. At Tõnismägi, consider how a memorial is shaped not only by stone and bronze, but also by actions repeated around it.
