Former Site of the Bronze Soldier
The Bronze Soldier’s removal from Tõnismägi in 2007 exposed sharply different memories of the war.
The Bronze Soldier stood on Tõnismägi as a Soviet war memorial in an area also linked to burials. For different people it represented victory over Nazism, the beginning of occupation or remembrance of loved ones. Its relocation in 2007 and the unrest that followed showed how deeply one public site could affect society. At the former location, remember that a single monument held several distinct experiences.
