Hans Pöögelmann Monument
A statue of Hans Pöögelmann in Lembitu Park carried an official Soviet story of revolution.
The Pöögelmann monument formed part of the Soviet political design of Tallinn’s public spaces. A figure placed in a park recalled a person, but also instructed passersby about which version of history to admire. The statue disappeared from public space after Estonia restored independence. In today’s park, its absence is revealing: a place once given to a political symbol now also records the rejection of its message.
