The World of Coachmen and Porters

Drivers and porters moved Tallinn’s goods from harbour to storehouse and kept the merchant city working.

Cargo unloaded at the port did not travel by itself to a cellar on Pikk Street or a market. People carried loads, while horses pulled carts through narrow streets. The wealth and accounts of merchants rested on this physical work. Workers’ names often recede in written histories, although commerce could not function without them. The Old Town map point represents a landscape of labour, not one documented porter’s stand.

Practical information

Address: Vanalinn

Walk from the direction of the harbour towards the merchant streets and notice their width. Do not treat one point as the workplace of every porter.
