Security Regime of the Pirita Olympics
The 1980 sailing regatta brought international sport to Soviet Tallinn, where visitors also encountered political controls.
The sailing events of the Moscow Olympics took place in Tallinn. Any major international event needs security, but under Soviet rule political monitoring of foreign visitors and local contacts formed another layer. Not every athlete or employee should be described as a security agent; particular measures require documentary or eyewitness evidence. Pirita’s open, ceremonial architecture can be viewed today with an awareness that movement through it was once carefully managed.
