Deportation Railway Cars at Baltic Station

Baltic Station connects Tallinn’s rail network with the memory of Soviet deportations, when a journey meant forced removal for many.

Mass deportations in 1941 and 1949 tore families apart in Estonia and sent people to distant parts of the Soviet Union. Railways formed part of the logistics of this state violence. At Balti jaam, however, the departure point of any particular transport needs documentary support: not every deportee left from the same platform. The image of a freight wagon evokes forced transport but cannot replace people’s testimony, names or recorded routes. Ordinary departures and historical memory meet at the working station.
