Destruction of Kalamaja Cemetery
The trees of Kalamaja Cemetery Park grow over a burial ground whose markers and earlier appearance were removed.
Kalamaja’s old cemetery belonged to the northern edge of Tallinn for centuries. It was turned into a park under Soviet rule, and much of its visible identity as a place of burial disappeared. The open landscape can seem timeless, although names, grave boundaries and mourners’ paths once marked it. An ordinary park map cannot locate individual graves accurately. The site raises a question: how can people enjoy a green space while keeping in mind those it was created to remember?
