Tallinn TV Tower in 1991
In August 1991 Tallinn TV Tower became a site of resistance because the ability to communicate mattered to Estonia’s independence.
During the Soviet coup attempt in August 1991, control of the tower was both a political and a technical issue. Its defenders faced Soviet armed units as Estonia restored its independence. The events are often told as a tense confrontation; particular conversations and dramatic details should be checked against testimony and documents. The tower became more than an observation platform: it showed how a state’s future can depend on its ability to speak to its people and to the wider world.
