Liiva Cemetery’s broad woodland landscape reflects Tallinn’s twentieth-century growth and countless personal losses.
Liiva became a large burial ground as Tallinn’s population and urban boundaries changed. Its long paths and varied graves reflect everyday city history rather than one defining event. Twentieth-century violence is also part of the landscape, but no row of graves is simply an exhibit: relatives still come to remember the dead. To investigate a particular story, begin with grave markers and reliable records instead of assuming that all burials belong to the same historical chapter.
