St Olaf’s Church
The soaring tower of St Olaf’s was a landmark from the sea, but its height also exposed the church to lightning and fire.
St Olaf’s Church shaped Tallinn’s skyline for centuries and helped travellers recognise the town from the sea. Height came at a cost: fire repeatedly damaged the tower and church, which had to be rebuilt. The building holds together the ambition of a merchant city and the danger of flames above its crowded roofs. Look up from the foot of the tower and imagine how far a blaze could be seen.
