St Nicholas’ Church
St Nicholas’ Church brings together a merchants’ church, elite burial vaults, wartime destruction and precious sacred art.
St Nicholas’ was founded as a church for merchants and seafarers, and its chapels and burial vaults reflected the wealth and social order of the city. Artworks, altarpieces and the memory of the dead accumulated here over centuries. The building was severely damaged in the March 1944 bombing and later restored as a museum. Medieval faith, funerary culture, destruction and the rescue of heritage all meet within its walls.
