Sailors’ Tales of the Great Coastal Gate

People and news arriving by sea entered walled Tallinn through the Great Coastal Gate.

The gate near Pikk 70 controlled access from the harbour. Sailors brought goods, reports from distant places and stories of storms or shipwrecks. Tales of ghost ships or sea spirits belong to folklore unless a specific historical account can be identified. The gate itself makes a more certain point: this was where the maritime world met the town’s rules and guards.
