Maiden Tower
The Maiden Tower’s name inspired stories of immured girls, although its true origin was probably far more ordinary.
Built into the city wall in the 14th century, the Maiden Tower has served as a fortification, a residence and a café. Its romantic name inspired tales of a girl walled inside and of restless spirits, but historians more plausibly connect it with the name of a former tower commander. The tower shows how a misunderstood name can grow into an enduring body of ghost folklore.
