Echoes in the Corridors of Patarei
Patarei’s long corridors and repeated doors made surveillance and separation of prisoners possible.
Inside Patarei, a corridor was more than a way between rooms. Cells opened onto it, guards moved along it and orders reached people who could not leave freely. Sound might announce an arrival before a person appeared, although individual prisoners’ experiences require testimony. The layout gives institutional power a simple physical form: who could move, whose door opened and who had to wait.
