Fat Margaret
Fat Margaret was built to defend the harbour, but its massive walls later served as storage and a prison.
Completed in the early 16th century, the enormous artillery tower protected the Great Coastal Gate and the approach from the harbour. After losing its military importance, it was used for several purposes, including as a prison. During the revolutionary events of 1917 the prison was attacked and burned. The restored tower now houses the Maritime Museum, bringing fortress, prison and seafaring history together.

The Estonian Maritime Museum occupies the tower. Notice the exceptional thickness of the walls and visit the roof for harbour views.
