Cells on Pagari Street
The small cells beneath Pagari 1 make the physical and psychological isolation of detainees tangible.
In the basement of the former security building, detention became a narrow room, a closed door and uncertainty about the next interrogation. Soviet authorities used such places to intimidate people and sever their links with the outside world. The dimensions of a cell do not tell the whole story: every detainee had a life before arrest and people who waited for them. A visit should remember those lives as well as the walls.
