Air Holes of Cellar Cells

Small openings in Pagari 1’s basement cells show how close the street could be to a prisoner and how distant freedom remained.

An opening in a basement cell provided ventilation and might admit a little light or the sound of the street. For the person confined inside, hearing the city did not mean being free to join it: a door and guards stood between them. That contrast helps explain detention without inventing the details of any one prisoner’s experience. The original form and location of a particular opening should be checked against the museum’s interpretation.
