St Catherine’s Monastery Garden

The idea of St Catherine’s monastery garden opens a quieter side of Dominican life beside Tallinn’s dense streets.

The community on Vene Street needed space for everyday work as well as prayer. An enclosed garden could offer a calmer inner world, but the monastery wall did not separate the friars completely from the city. Teaching, household work and relationships with supporters tied them to the surroundings. The garden’s precise old shape and the position of any burials need plans or archaeological study before they can be mapped in detail. A quiet courtyard was not an inactive space.
