Legend of Old Thomas
The soldier-shaped weathervane on Tallinn Town Hall acquired the name Old Thomas and a legendary role as city guard.
Old Thomas is the name given to the figure on the Town Hall tower. The metal figure shows wind direction, but folklore also gave him a life story and a watchman’s duty. The details of that tale should be understood as legend, not a documented biography of one man. Look up from the square and consider how a small figure high above the street became one of the city’s best-known characters.
