Gravestones of St Catherine’s Monastery
Grave slabs displayed on the wall of St Catherine’s Passage recall the former monastic church and its burials.
The old grave slabs visible along the passage were originally connected with the ground and places where people were buried. Set upright now, they allow passersby to read names and examine carved stone from another angle. Moving them helps preserve the markers but changes their relationship to the original graves. Each slab commemorates a person, not simply a Gothic pattern. The passage joins a present-day walk to the burial landscape of a former monastery.
