Central Prison under German Occupation
Under German occupation, Patarei Central Prison also formed part of a system of political and racial persecution.
Patarei remained a prison when the Soviet occupation was replaced by German rule. The new authorities detained people there, including political opponents, Jews and others targeted by persecution. A prisoner’s fate depended on decisions taken by the occupation regime and could extend far beyond the prison. The acts of different regimes should not be merged into one anonymous prison story: each had its own orders, officials and victims.
