Interrogation Rooms on Pagari Street

Interrogation rooms at Pagari 1 were part of Soviet security operations aimed at extracting information and breaking resistance.

The building on Pagari Street was more than a place of detention. During interrogations people could face threats, uncertainty, deprivation of sleep and violence. These acts occurred in offices where the language of official records could conceal human suffering. Without evidence, the appearance of one present-day room should not stand for every interrogation held here. Testimony from detainees and the responsibility of the security authorities belong at the centre of the story.
