Execution Room at Patarei
The execution room associated with Patarei Prison recalls death sentences and the state authorities responsible for carrying them out.
Detention at Patarei did not end with locking a cell door. Under different regimes, some prisoners’ next rooms were their last. The history of an execution room must be told through people and documented events: names, dates and the use of particular spaces need archival confirmation and may differ by period. The gravity of the site does not depend on an assumed large number. It lies in a state turning a decision to kill into an institutional procedure.
