St Barbara’s Cemetery
The lost St Barbara’s Cemetery recalls how central Tallinn expanded across former burial grounds.
St Barbara’s Cemetery once lay beyond the built-up town, in what has become a busy central district. As Tallinn grew, the cemetery disappeared from view. Human remains encountered in construction and excavation made its former use visible again. Around Liivalaia Street and Pärnu Road, read the landscape in layers: beneath present-day traffic were places where people once buried and mourned their dead.
