St John’s Almshouse
St John’s Almshouse offered shelter to sick and poor people outside the densely settled heart of medieval Tallinn.
St John’s Almshouse on the Tartu road formed part of Tallinn’s historical system of care. It served people whose illness or poverty made daily life difficult. Its position beyond the Old Town also reveals another aspect: care went hand in hand with separation and fear of infection. Need, faith and social boundaries met here. Look beyond the old building and consider the people who lived and received help in it.
