St Michael’s Swedish Church
The building of St Michael’s Swedish Church has served as a poorhouse, a church and a sports hall.
The walls of St Michael’s on Rüütli Street have adapted to strikingly different uses. The building’s past includes poor relief, worship by a Swedish-speaking congregation and its conversion to a sports space during the Soviet period. Congregational life returned after Estonia regained independence. The story shows how political power can change the use of sacred space without erasing all the layers that came before.
