Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is both an active Orthodox church and a contested legacy of Russian imperial rule on Toompea.
The cathedral on Castle Square was built when Estonia formed part of the Russian Empire. Its position at the centre of political power on Toompea and its striking appearance carried political meaning from the outset. Later generations have debated its symbolism and future. At the same time, it remains an active Orthodox church. The building brings together worship, power and differing memories of the past.
