Storage sites and passages cut into Astangu’s limestone escarpment reveal an underground side of Tallinn’s military history.
Building tunnels and stores made the escarpment a practical military space. Openings do not necessarily lead into one continuous secret network: different structures had different purposes and construction phases. Entrances may look inviting, but unstable old works, collapse hazards and potentially dangerous objects make independent entry unsafe. Maps, historical records and the view from public paths offer a better way to understand this underground heritage.
