Bastion Passages

The Bastion Passages moved soldiers and ammunition in concealment, later serving as air-raid shelters and temporary living spaces.

Tunnels built inside the 17th-century earthworks allowed defenders to move unseen between sections of the bastions. Their purpose changed with the city: they offered shelter in wartime, later featured in civil-defence planning, and abandoned spaces provided refuge for homeless people. Cool damp air, limestone walls and prolonged darkness turn Tallinn’s underground history into a physical experience rather than a distant story.
