Russalka Shoreline on Pirita Road

The Russalka monument turns visitors towards the sea where the armoured ship Russalka was lost in 1893.

On Tallinn’s waterfront, the memorial recalls the people who died when the ship sank. It joins a sea view to remembrance: the site of the sinking is not visible from shore, but the water links the monument to the final voyage. The coastline and walking routes around Pirita Road have changed since then, while the outward gaze remains. Do not read the statue’s direction as the precise coordinate of the wreck; maritime records are needed for that.
