Lost Villages of Lasnamäe
Before Lasnamäe’s large housing estates there were farms, roads and place names whose traces are scattered through today’s district.
Soviet-era apartment developments changed the pattern of settlement in Lasnamäe at speed. The area had not been empty: villages, fields, individual homesteads and routes stood here before the blocks. New streets did not always follow older paths, so a former village may now lie beneath several housing quarters and green spaces. Identifying the site of one lost farm requires more than a modern address; maps from different periods must be compared. Old names offer one way back to the landscape that preceded the estate.
