Lasnamäe Limestone Quarries

The limestone quarries of Lasnamäe supplied building stone to Tallinn and left traces later reshaped by housing.

Building Tallinn required limestone, and extracting it changed Lasnamäe’s landforms. Quarrying meant hard work and steep edges that could remain long after operations ceased. As the district grew, some older pits were filled or adapted. Yet a modern slope or hollow is not automatically evidence of one particular quarry; geological data and old plans are needed to identify it. Tallinn’s stone buildings and the ground from which their material came belong to the same story.
