Sacred Grove of Sõjamäe

The name Sõjamäe brings together traditions of a sacred grove and memories of fighting during the St George’s Night Uprising.

Different stories meet in the Sõjamäe area: the idea of an older natural sacred place and remembrance of medieval conflict. Folklore may preserve meaning even when the grove’s former boundaries, vegetation or the exact scene of a battle cannot be established from available evidence. A place name alone does not prove that every event happened on one parcel of land. Here the landscape invites reflection on how places become memorials, and how archaeology can refine or limit traditional accounts.
