Iru Hill Fort
Iru Hillfort shows that fortified settlements stood near the Pirita River long before medieval Tallinn.
High ground by the river offered views of movement and opportunities for defence. Archaeological research and layers of soil tell the story of Iru’s use; no complete ancient wall stands here for visitors to see, and timber and earth change over time. Different periods of occupation should not be merged into one continuous fortress story. From the hill, however, the relationship between river, height and routes is easy to sense, inviting the question of why people chose the site before the modern city grew.
