Bombings of Baltic Station
Tallinn’s Baltic Station was a crucial rail junction whose surroundings were vulnerable during wartime air raids.
Trains carried people, supplies and military cargo in wartime. Stations and the buildings around them could therefore become vulnerable in attacks and fighting. Accounts of Balti jaam need to distinguish different years and incidents: a single photograph or ruined site cannot establish the cause of every loss. Strategic importance did not erase the experience of passengers, railway workers and other civilians. Today’s busy station offers a place to consider how quickly the meaning of a transport hub can change.
