Noblessner Submarine Shipyard

Noblessner’s waterfront began as a submarine shipyard long before it became an open urban district.

In the early twentieth century, a factory linked to orders from the imperial Russian navy rose here. Building submarines required metalwork, electricity, precise components and many workers; military technology also shaped ordinary lives in Tallinn. Today’s restaurants and cultural venues occupy an industrial landscape whose individual buildings once had different functions. Not every surviving wall marks the exact spot where a submarine took shape. Notice how a restricted production site has returned to public use.
