Ruins of the Estonia Theatre in 1944

Severely damaged in the March 1944 bombing, Estonia Theatre made the destruction of war visible in central Tallinn.

The Estonia theatre and concert building was a prominent centre of the city’s cultural life. Soviet air raids on Tallinn in March 1944 badly damaged it, leaving a wartime ruin. Reconstruction allowed performances to return, but the present-day building does not immediately show that rupture. The story of its ruins belongs alongside the human losses of the same bombing: the building is a visible bearer of memory, not the night’s only victim. Historical photographs help compare the damaged and restored structure.
